Bonneville Power Administration says Cob can plug in

Published September 10, 2004

The Bonneville Power Administration has decided the Cob Energy Facility can hook up to BPA's electrical substation, if and when the Cob facility is permitted and built.

The administration is a federal agency that owns and operates the majority of the high-voltage electric transmission lines in the Pacific Northwest.

BPA is required to offer interconnection to eligible customers such as Cob on a first-come, first-serve basis. A BPA spokeswoman said about 10 deals are approved each year. All agreements are subject to environmental review.

Cob's proposal was submitted to the federal agency in October 2001. BPA released an environmental impact statement in June 2004 to assess how interconnection would affect the environment.

BPA's administration and chief executive officer, Stephen Wright, recently issued the decision to allow Cob to connect to the grid.

"The COB Energy Facility will provide economic and reliable energy, helping to modernize the national energy supply as envisioned by the National Energy Policy," Wright wrote.

Wright added that controversial issues with the Cob facility focus on land use, air emissions and water use and disposal. All those issues, he said, fall under the jurisdiction of other agencies.
