Rep. Garrard seeks comments from local citizens on power plant

By BROOK REINHARD

The House Land Use Review Committee will venture out of Salem and hold a hearing at the Klamath County Government Center on Friday, May 14, at 1 p.m.

State Rep. Bill Garrard, a two-term state legislator who represents southern Klamath County, is the chairman of the committee. He said the hearing, which is taking place in Klamath Falls at his request, will give local citizens a chance to tell the committee their views on the Cob Energy Facility, and other land use issues. David Stewart-Smith, the assistant director for energy resources at the Oregon Department of Energy, will be on hand to answer questions and testify before the committee.

While Garrard could not be reached for comment this morning, vice-chairwoman Rep. Vicki Berger, R-Salem, said she's excited to travel outside of Salem and hear a different viewpoint on land use issues.

"It is our intention to be out in the community a little more, to get more than the Salem perspective on what's going on in this state," she said.

Berger said this is the first time in the current session that the interim committee has met outside of Salem. She said she's interested to hear feedback on land use laws from a statewide basis.

"It needs to be looked at on a statewide basis on what it's doing right and what it's doing wrong," she said. "Too often, we're just seen as those folks in Salem. Let's not just do what works in Salem or Portland. Let's talk about what we can do statewide, and grasp the issues that make sense."
