Dam removal is focus of Modoc meeting

Herald and News August 24, 2006

The possible removal of the Chiloquin Dam on the Sprague River will be the focus of the public meeting of the Modoc Point Irrigation District at 6 p.m. Aug. 30.

The meeting originally scheduled for Friday has been canceled.

Discussions between officials with the district and the Bureau of Indian Affairs led to an agreement that removal of the dam was the best option to increase fish passage on the river.

An election to approve the final terms of the dam’s removal is scheduled for Sept. 22, but district officials are holding the meeting on Aug. 30 to provide copies of the agreement its constituents. Officials from the bureaus of Indian Affairs and Reclamation will also be on hand to answer any questions.

Any questions regarding the dam’s removal should be directed to the district’s attorney, Laura A. Schroeder at (503) 281-4100.
