Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch)

Coho Recovery
1/26/04

In August, 2002 the California Fish and Game Commission (Commission) issued a finding that coho salmon warranted listing as a threatened species in the Southern Oregon/Northern California Coast ESU range and as an endangered species in the Central California Coast ESU range. The Commission directed the Department of Fish and Game to develop a Recovery Strategy.

Subsequently, the Directory of the Department of Fish and Game initiated a multi-stakeholder statewide Coho Recovery Team (CRT) to make recommendations on components of a plan to recover the species. Additionally, a team was created to focus on agricultural water and land issues in the Shasta and Scott river valleys. This team is known as the Shasta-Scott Coho Recovery Team (SSRT). CohoRecovery.Org was created to support these teams and has indexed many of the relevant documents.

On July 28, 2003, the Shasta-Scott Coho Recovery Team (SSRT) sent a report to the Director detailing a pilot program for coho recovery specific to the Shasta and Scott river valleys. The cover letter (9 kb) and Shasta and Scott River Pilot Program for Coho Salmon Recovery (6,328 kb) are available as PDF files.

On August 4, 2003, the statewide Coho Recovery Team (CRT) sent a report to the Director detailing their findings and recommendations. The CRT cover letter and report (703 kb) along with eight map figures: 1a, 1b, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 4a and 4b (~150–200 kb each) are available as PDF files.

On August 28, 2003, the Department presented the Recovery Strategy for California Coho Salmon to the Fish and Game Commission. This document incorporates the findings and recommendations of the CRT and SSRT reports.

On November 7, 2003, the Department released a draft revision of the Recovery Strategy for California Coho Salmon (PDF, 14.3Mb) (errata) for public review and comment. This document is an update to the report presented to the DFG Commission on August 28. Please see the news release detailing the comment period and the schedule of public meetings.

In December, 2004, the Coho Recovery Team released the CRT's Report to the Director. (PDF, 370 kb)

On January 26, 2004, the Department provided the Response to Comments (PDF, 930 kb) to the Fish and Game Commission. This document includes the Department's responses to oral and written comments received during November and December 2003 on the public review draft of the Coho Salmon Recovery Strategy. Included with the Response to Comments are 4 attachments: Chapter 4 Recovery Goals and Delisting Criteria (PDF, 150 kb), Section 7.24 Timber Management Alternatives (PDF, 44 kb), and Appendix F Cost and Socioeconomic Impacts (text, tables) (PDFs, 186 kb and 83 kb). These sections incorporate revisions based on public comments.
