Why would a prominent scientist/global warming activist commit acts of fraud and theft against global warming skeptics and then send to the media a forged document containing fictitious, over-the-top schemes that would embarrass skeptics? Answer: Because global warming activists cannot muster sufficient credible science to win the debate.

With the weight of damning evidence closing in on him, scientist/activist Peter Gleick has admitted he was the “Heartland Insider” who committed fraud and identity theft, lying and stealing his way into possession of Heartland Institute internal documents and then sending those documents to global warming activist groups and sympathetic media. Gleick also sent to the press an additional document, a fake “2012 Climate Strategy,” that he claims he did not write.

The real story in this Fakegate scandal is how the global warming movement is desperate, delusional, and collapsing as global warming fails to live up to alarmist predictions. People with sound science on their side do not need to forge documents to validate their arguments or make the other side look bad. Also, people who are so desperate as to forge documents in an attempt to frame their rivals are clearly not above forging scientific data, studies, and facts to similarly further their cause. It is both striking and telling how global warming activists have failed to condemn the acts of forgery in the Fakegate scandal.

Gleick repeatedly claimed in his confession that his misconduct was motivated by a desire for creating a rational public debate on global warming and that he was trying to fight back against the people he claims are seeking to prevent such a debate. Yet in January 2012 The Heartland Institute cordially invited Gleick to publicly debate me at the organization’s 2012 anniversary benefit dinner. All Gleick would had to have done is defeat me in that debate and he could have accomplished his twin goals of promoting public debate and embarrassing The Heartland Institute. Yet Gleick declined to participate in such a fair and open debate, and that day began his acts of fraud and theft against Heartland.

Beyond our invitation to Gleick, The Heartland Institute has cordially invited dozens of scientists who believe humans are creating a global warming crisis to give presentations and to debate skeptics at our annual global warming conferences. Only one such scientist has ever accepted our offer.

Truth doesn’t require forgeries and fake documents to win an argument. Climategate and Fakegate show just how desperate the collapsing global warming alarmism movement has become.

The Atlantic sniffs out thief, forger … Curry rips Gleick on ethics, integrity … Debate invitation shreds Gleick excuse … Scientists report no decline in Antarctic ice sheet … No decline in Sierra Nevada snowfall … Malaria declining as climate warms … Cloud height may be mitigating global warming

THE ATLANTIC SNIFFS OUT THIEF, FORGER

While the stakes and repercussions of Fakegate were much more serious than a fictional television crime drama, the themes were very similar. It did not take long after Fakegate burst onto the scene before The Atlantic columnist Megan McArdle was hot on the trail of identifying the forger and thief. McArdle’s multiple blog posts on the topic are as gripping as any fictional or real-life crime scene investigations.

CURRY RIPS GLEICK ON ETHICS, INTEGRITY

The shocking revelation that Peter Gleick committed fraud and theft in obtaining and then circulating Heartland Institute private documents was made even more surreal by Gleick’s leadership in scientific ethics groups. Climate scientist Judith Curry captured the outrage felt by many that such a high-profile science “ethicist” would stoop to such tactics.

DEBATE INVITATION SHREDS GLEICK EXCUSE

In his blog post confessing to fraud and theft, Peter Gleick claims he was motivated by a desire for creating a rational public debate on global warming and that he was simply trying to fight back against the people he claims are seeking to prevent such a debate. Yet in January 2012 The Heartland Institute cordially invited Gleick to participate in a keynote debate at the institute’s 2012 anniversary benefit dinner. Gleick declined the invitation. Anthony Watts has posted the email thread.

SCIENTISTS REPORT NO DECLINE IN ANTARCTIC ICE SHEET

While Al Gore and other global warming activists took a boat trip to Antarctica in late January to call attention to global warming, Dutch scientists report in a newly published study that the Antarctic ice sheet has not lost any ice during the past 30-plus years. The study, published in the peer-reviewed Geophysical Research Letters, shows no trend in Antarctic ice mass.

NO DECLINE IN SIERRA NEVADA SNOWFALL

Annual snowfall in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is showing no sign of decline, according to a study by University of Alabama-Huntsville climate scientist John Christy. Christy examined snowfall data for more than 130 years. “There isn’t a trend significantly different from zero for the whole period,” said Christy in a press release. “I also looked at just the past 50 years and there is no trend over this recent stretch either.”

MALARIA DECLINING AS CLIMATE WARMS

Alarmist predictions that global warming will cause more cases of malaria are being refuted by real-world malaria statistics. Environmental scientist Chip Knappenberger has written a compelling summary of why global warming is not defeating efforts to reduce global malaria occurrence.

CLOUD HEIGHT MAY BE MITIGATING GLOBAL WARMING

The global average cloud height has declined during the past decade, which could be having a mitigating effect on global warming. New Zealand scientists analyzed satellite measurements of global cloud height and published the surprising results in the peer-reviewed Geophysical Research Letters. Climate scientist Patrick Michaels explains the implications in World Climate Report.
