As many of you know, the 2002 Farm Bill (The Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002) expires in September of 2007.   The United States Department of Agriculture,  the House of Representatives and the Senate Agriculture Committees have been holding hearings discussing the current farm bill and possible changes for the 2007 farm bill.   Both Senator Smith and Representative Walden have asked the Chairmen of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees to hold field hearings in Oregon as the Committees prepare to rewrite the farm bill in 2007.   While the Senate Agriculture Committee is just beginning to set dates for future field hearings, the House Committee has been holding field hearings around the country for the past few months.

The House Agriculture Committee will hold a hearing to focus on Northwest agriculture on Saturday, June 10, 2006 at 10:00 am in Yakima, Washington.   This hearing will focus on Washington and Oregon agriculture.   The House Committee on Agriculture is finalizing the list of speakers who will be participating in the hearing.   When we see this witness list, we will pass it along to you.    Only the witnesses selected by the Committee will be allowed to speak at this hearing.    The Committee, however, is always open to receiving views from all of agriculture and we encourage you to submit testimony which can be included in the official record of the hearing.    Congressmen Walden will be attending this field hearing and would be happy to facilitate having testimony from Oregon agriculture being submitted for the official Congressional hearing record.    Please let either of us know if you have any questions.
