Robert L. ‘Bob’ Boring

Robert L. “Bob” Boring, 74, passed away March 21, 2014, at his home in Klamath Falls after a short but fierce battle with cancer.

A celebration of life service is scheduled at 4 p.m. Monday, March 31, at Klamath Christian Center. Military honors are at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Bob was born to Emery C. Boring and Florence K. (Lister) Boring on March 6, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the oldest of four children (Tom, Paul and Joyce).

They lived in Maple Heights, Ohio, from 1952 until 1956, when they relocated to Castro Valley, Calif. As part of the Castro Valley High School wrestling team, Bob won the Northern California 145-pound state wrestling championships in 1957 and 1958.

In 1962, he graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Portland State University, obtained his Oregon teaching certificate, and married the love of his life, Carol Virginia Sanborn. He joined the Air Force and completed two tours in Vietnam as an F-4 Phantom pilot.   After seven years in the Air Force and earning his master’s degree from U.S.C., Bob and Carol moved to Humboldt County, Calif., to raise their three children, Randy, Teri and Richard. He found his calling as a teacher when he joined Jacoby Creek Elementary School in Arcata, Calif. He often worked as a summer fire lookout (Acker Rock, Pickett Butte, Schonchin Butte, Parker Mtn., and Chase Mountain).

In 1982, his passion for hunting brought the family to Klamath County, where he taught for one year at Jefferson State Junior High before joining the Tulelake High School faculty as a math teacher. He retired from the California school system in 2007 and began teaching at Lost River High School. He retired from the Oregon school system after about 10 years, but continued substituting until 2013. His students treasured his jokes and puns and how he cared about them as individuals.

Bob nurtured many friendships through his hobbies, church, school and community involvement. He was a dedicated member of numerous hunting and habitat preservation organizations and an active ham radio operator (K6YGI / W6IIF). He served on the board of directors of Pacific Crest F.C.U. for 17 years. Much of his spare time was filled with tournament bass fishing, hunting, gold prospecting, teaching hunter safety, tutoring math and traveling the world with Carol. He especially enjoyed Alaska, Guatemala, Germany, and a 50th wedding anniversary cruise around the United Kingdom. He frequently made time to take his grandchildren fishing and boating.

He was preceded in death by his parents, who had retired in Klamath Falls, and his sister, Joyce Leonard of San Ramon, Calif.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; son, Randy Boring and daughter-in-law, Karen Hudson Boring of Duncanville, Texas, (granddaughter, Anna Michelle); daughter, Teri Cline and son-in-law, Lee Cline of Klamath Falls   (grandson, Jarrett and granddaughter, Lily); son, Richard Boring and daughter-in-law, Tammy (Hern) Boring of Shelton, Wash., (granddaughter, Elizabeth Joy and grandsons, Timothy, David, Jonathan and Joseph); brother, Tom Boring (niece, Diane Fitzpatrick and nephew, Jeff Boring) and sister-in-law, Lori Boring of Hillsboro, Ore.; brother, Paul Boring and sister-in-law, Chris Boring of Crooked River Ranch, Ore., (nieces, Jill Mercado and Heidi Miller); brother-in-law, Dan Leonard of Ladera Ranch, Calif., (nephew, Bryan Leonard and niece, Tiffany Andrews).

Memorial donations may be made in his honor to the Pregnancy Hope Center, 2421 Washburn Way, Klamath Falls, OR 97603, or to Wycliffe Bible Translators at wycliffe.org/ Give.aspx.
