Klamath Dam removal agreement signing set

February 16, 2010, Sacramento Bee
Decades of fighting over scarce water in the Klamath Basin is coming to an end with the signing of an agreement to remove four dams from the Klamath River.

The governors of Oregon and California, the CEO of PacifiCorp, and the U.S. Secretary of Interior are joining farmers, fishing and conservation groups, and Indian tribes for ceremonies Thursday in the Oregon Capitol Rotunda.

Part of the agreement lays out terms for removing the dams starting in 2020. Another details a water management plan and $1 billion in environmental restoration.

Removing the dams - scheduled to begin in 2020 if full funding is approved - will open hundreds of miles of river that have been closed to salmon for a century.
