The wild up and downs are caused by winds.  When the lake elevation at the south end of the lake goes down, the gauge at the north end of the lake shows an increase in elevation.

The following graph is from the Klamath Herald and News dated December 20, 2004 and shows how the lake is filling faster this year than average years and last year.
