Date for public hearing on Stateline Compost set July 28, Comment Period Extended

by CHEYENNE SCHOEN, Herald and News 6/25/16

A public hearing and information session for the proposed Stateline Compost facility off of Highway 97 will be held by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 28 at the Midland Grange Hall at 6601 Tingley Lane in Klamath Falls, according to a news release from the DEQ.

The DEQ has also opened up a new comment period for the public that runs until 5 p.m., Aug. 2, 2016. The DEQ held the first comment period for the solid waste permit proposal from May 11 through June 10, and opened the new comment period in response to community interest.

Stateline Compost anticipates processing 30,000 tons of feedstock from agricultural, municipal and industrial sources and the general public, the release said. The piles would aerate on a 40,000 square-foot asphalt pad.

Leachate and runoff from the pad would be directed through a bio-filter lining the pad, and a 10-foot lined rock spillway would direct the leachate from the pad to a lined retention pond.

According to the release, “the applicant has already received local land use approvals from Klamath County, which is necessary for DEQ to process the permit.”
It also said the DEQ will conduct annual inspections on the property to ensure compliance with its permits.
