Second wolf attack being investigated

Herald and News 10/7/16 by Stephen Floyd,

A second report of a wolf attack in the region has been received by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW), this time taking place in Klamath County.

On Thursday, ODFW confirmed they are looking into a fatal attack on livestock in the Fort Klamath area.

Department spokesperson Michelle Dennehy said a cattle producer contacted the state to report the event, which involved livestock killed on private pastureland.

“We are investigating this incident but don’t have a determination yet,” said Dennehy.

She said the conclusions from their investigation will be posted by by early next week and will be accessible at http://bit.ly/2dWbOQg.

Wolves known to frequent the area include the Rogue Pack, comprised of two adults and four pups recorded as of the end of last year, and OR-25, a 4-year-old lone male.

This is the second recent wolf attack on livestock in the region, the first taking place last month near Timber Fall Butte in Lake County. OR-28, a 3-year-old female and member of the Silver Lake Wolves pack, is suspected of attacking a calf in a herd grazing on federal land. The calf has so far survived its injuries, which authorities believe were inflicted within the last two or three weeks.

Dennehy said a conflict deterrence plan is being composed in response to the attack by OR-28 and will be available online once completed. If a wolf attack is confirmed for Fort Klamath, ODFW will advise cattle producers on the appropriate measures to take.
